Senior Facilitator in DE&I and Organization Development

Joyce Hammel is a Senior Facilitator in DE&I and Organization Development with Exponential Talent. She brings to the firm decades of experience in all aspects of human resources management. Throughout her career in industry and in the university environment, Joyce has practiced and honed her approach of identifying risks and problem areas early, and either preventing issues from arising or facilitating mutually beneficial solutions.
After beginning her career in the tumultuous years of the Bell System breakup through the emergence of cellular, then experiencing the early years of the tech industry, Joyce moved to the California university system. During her 20 years with the University of California, San Francisco, Joyce worked in labor relations, talent management and compensation, served as the Sexual Harassment Prevention and Title IX Officer and became the Director of Diversity and Inclusion and Strategic Organizational Development for Facilities Services within Campus Life Services.
As the Sexual Harassment Prevention Officer, Joyce took on a program that needed to move from being reactive to proactive, adding a major focus on prevention. She ultimately trained 20,000 people and oversaw 700 investigations, the majority of which she resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. The average settlement paid out dropped by almost 90%.
Most recently, Joyce managed the effort to raise employee engagement in the university’s highly diverse facilities services organization. Her work to create a highly professional, performing and engaged organization beset with issues relating to vast cultural and language divides resulted in measurable improvement in 11 of 12 areas and saw a marked increase in employee engagement. This work included interventions in the formation and development of the leadership team, a redesign of management roles, the design and development of a manager training program, the development and communication of missions and visions for all teams in the organization, the design and implementation of a diversity and inclusion strategy, a strategic employee engagement initiative, the redesign of the performance management process, and the creation of an enhanced recognition process and program.
Joyce is also a certified Life Coach, as well as a mediator, facilitator and investigator. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical/Medical Social Work and Master’s in Business Administration/Public Administration from Kent State University.
